The Connection Between Gum Disease and Oral Health

Your oral and overall health have a connected relationship, if one becomes compromised it may impact the other as well.   This distinct relationship, known as the oral-systemic connection, looks into the affects poor oral care has on systemic
health concerns. At Millennium Family Dental, Dr. Risty provides periodontal disease treatments for his patients to maintain the well-being of their
gums along with the rest of the body.

Gum Disease and Health Concerns

Gum disease is caused by plaque-build up allowing for the development of bacteria around and underneath the gum line. The infection is recognized by bleeding when brushing and flossing, swollen gums, and in its advanced stage, tooth loss. If it remains
untreated, these bacteria can access the rest of the body through the blood stream and causes blood clots to form. This can be potentially dangerous for patients who have or are at risk for heart disease, have high blood pressure, and smokers.  For
patients who have dementia, the infection may impact their cognitive decline.

Patients with diabetes may find it difficult to control their blood sugar levels if they’ve developed periodontal disease. The inflammatory components of the bacteria make it difficult for patients to manage their insulin levels. It can be difficult for
these individuals to combat the infection as they have weakened immune systems.

Overall Health and Preventive Care

Gum disease is prevented by a proactive at-home oral care routine as well as visiting the dentist for bi-annual visits. Your dentist and hygienist take the time to examine your gum health by measuring the depth of your gum pockets, where plaque can reside.
Brushing and flossing every day removes the plaque, preventing the bacteria from inflaming the gum tissue.

However, taking care of your body also impacts your smile’s appearance and health. If you smoke or use other tobacco products, your smile may become stained. If they have signs of periodontal disease, these habits may impact the soft tissues ability to
heal from the infection. By prohibiting from smoking during the time of periodontal disease treatment and maintenance can ensure a speedier recovery.
